You know the ocean view is there. You know the golf course is there. You can see them both from the road and driveway, but even as you walk through the wide hallway, two huge square columns guard the space and increase the feeling of anticipation for the view.

The living and dining areas flow easily outdoors, where the magnificence of this property reveals itself. Situated on a prime site, overlooking the Indian Ocean, the house has an uninterrupted view from tee to green of the ’s par five, 13th hole. Below the green and just offshore, white waves swirl and break against the bleached rocks which are reflected in the stonework of the house, both inside and out.

The style of the house is classic contemporary. No gaudiness, no Tuscan, no cuteness about it. There’s a feeling of relief that this is not just another designer show house. It’s a comfortable place to relax, yet still an entertainer’s dream – an elegant, yet understated luxury home. ‘Luxury’ because it’s not until you peel yourself away from the view, that you really take in the true quality and uniqueness of the home.

Using materials like stone, teak, mahogany, stainless steel, marble, and granite, the house reflects its natural surroundings. The stone fireplace, repeating the same rock from outside, dominates the living room. The chimney breast, with log storage on either side, is painted a brave, contrasting, dark, earthy hue. The living room and dining room have exposed, varnished double beam rafters, the effect of which is softened by subtle lighting. There are rows of starlights in the side bulkhead to add atmosphere and concealed lighting behind the rafters which create a warming effect at night.

All appliances are by Miele and include unusual items like a steamer as well as the expected luxury coffee station, double oven, wine cooler and ice-making refrigerator. A square skylight in the middle of the ceiling floods the kitchen with light.

The outdoor deck is low maintenance Zimbabwean teak which silvers with age. An entire outside wall from the ground up, as well as the deck columns, are made of stone, brought to site, hand chipped and installed by a stonemason. Everything mirrors the natural surroundings. Even the cocktail spa copies the very shape of the bunker guarding the front of the 13th green and the form of the rock pool looks like it was copied from the shape of the green itself.

Everything in this 503 square metre house is substantial. There is no skimping on materials or space. No narrow passageways here – wide spaces, wide hallways, wide staircases. Space is what it's all about and the sizes of the rooms in the house really work.

The four bedrooms, all essentially master suites with their own bathrooms, are particularly comfortable, each with its own private balcony and view.

Two of the bedrooms are upstairs, reached by a mag- nificent hand-carved mahogany staircase with travertine risers. These duplicate the bedrooms downstairs. Each room has its own linen space.

They are even designed to take his and her shoes – more drawers for her, fewer yet larger drawers for him. The bedrooms feel more like luxury hotel suites than residential rooms, but without seeming impersonal.

Like the rocks below, that are pounded daily by the sea, this house is built and designed to stand the test of time – making it a difficult place to leave.

Text from article in Garden Route Living (issue 10) in which Ocean Lodge Pezula was featured.

Pezula Golf Estate is one of the premier residential developments in South Africa. With its superb location high above the lagoon-side town of Knysna on the Garden Route coast and its unique natural environment, this sought-after estate offers the discerning buyer excellent security, an unparalled lifestyle and a superb investment opportunity.

The development is limited to a maximum of 500 sites on 250 hectares, allowing an average of just two homes per hectare. Built around the magnificent Pezula Championship Golf Course, the estate looks across the course to the Knysna Lagoon and the Indian Ocean.

A unique feature of Pezula Golf Estate is the Sparrebos, a 45-hectare Afromontane forest with many animal and bird species, located at the south-eastern corner of the estate in a steep fan-shaped gorge, which protects the tall trees within it.

The Home Owners Association is committed to preserving and protecting the natural environment of the estate and in doing so, safeguarding the unique lifestyle of the residents.

The Villa is located at the Indian Ocean side of the Estate next to the thirteenth green, and has wonderful sea views from all bedrooms and the living room.

Knysna is surrounded by indigenous forests that survive on meager rainfalls compared to rainforests worldwide, averaging from 550mm to a high of 950mm per annum. Most of the southern facing slopes will receive on average 550mm, with portions of the foothills receiving up to 1200mm per annum.
